An engagement ring budget can feel like a guessing game, especially when two rings that look similar have very different prices. The most useful starting point is knowing what you would enjoy spending, then understanding which choices change the price.
At Victoria’s Jewellery, the examples in this guide range from a R8,900 lab-grown sapphire ring in sterling silver to a R42,500 lab-grown diamond design in 18k yellow gold. They show several possibilities within our collection, rather than an average price for South Africa or a minimum you should spend.
Your ring should feel right on your hand and fit comfortably into your life. There is no need to measure your commitment in months of salary.
What can your engagement ring budget buy
These are listed prices checked on 2 November 2026, before promotional discounts. Each example specifies its metal and stones; prices may change, and a different metal or specification can change the total. The linked examples use ring size M for a consistent comparison. Select your own size before ordering.
Under R10,000
If colour appeals to you, consider the Georgie blue sapphire trilogy ring, priced at R8,900 in sterling silver. Its 8 × 6 mm oval lab-grown blue sapphire is paired with two round lab-grown diamonds totalling 0.12ct.
It is a lovely starting point for someone who wants a colourful engagement ring. Be clear about the metal you are comparing: the same design in 9k yellow gold is R14,700. A silver price should not be mistaken for a gold price.
R10,000 to R20,000
This budget offers several different directions. Our four-claw 0.50ct lab-grown diamond solitaire is R12,900 in 9k yellow gold, with a round centre stone and a classic setting.
For a more detailed design, Sadie is R16,890 in 9k yellow gold. It combines a near-colourless round moissanite centre with vivid green marquise moissanite accents. The colour and arrangement give it a very different personality from a solitaire.
If an oval diamond is your priority, Zoey with a 1ct lab-grown diamond is R17,900 in 9k yellow gold. You do not need to increase your budget beyond R20,000 to find a one-carat lab-grown diamond ring in this collection.
R20,000 to R30,000
Here you can explore a larger centre stone or more detailed diamond accents. Olive with a 1.5ct oval lab-grown diamond is R28,500 in 9k yellow gold. Its marquise lab-grown diamond accents add another 0.26ct across the shoulders.
Alternatively, Zoey with a 2ct oval lab-grown diamond is R29,000 in 9k yellow gold. These two rings make a useful comparison: would you prefer the larger solitaire, or the smaller centre with a more intricate setting?
Above R30,000
A higher budget can also go towards your preferred metal. The same 2ct Zoey is R36,000 in 18k yellow gold, while the 1.5ct Olive is R42,500 in 18k yellow gold.
These examples show why price cannot be read from carat weight alone. Before stretching your budget, try to identify the change you actually want, whether that is the metal, the centre stone or the surrounding detail.
What changes the price of an engagement ring
The centre stone
Stone type, size and quality all matter. For diamonds, compare the cut, colour, clarity and carat weight together. Carat measures weight, so also look at the stone’s dimensions and its appearance on your hand. Ask whether the advertised weight refers to the centre stone or all the diamonds combined.
The metal
Always compare the same metal and purity. Our 1ct Zoey, for example, is R17,900 in 9k yellow gold and R27,000 in 18k yellow gold. Both prices are for the same listed centre-stone specification. Metal colour can affect the price too, so check the selected option rather than relying on a collection’s starting price.
The design
Accent stones, their settings and the amount of metal used all contribute to the finished price. A simple-looking solitaire and an intricate cluster are different pieces of work. Compare complete rings, including their specifications, rather than assuming that the largest centre stone must be the most expensive option.
Which stone should you choose
Lab-grown diamonds are diamonds, with essentially the same chemical composition and physical properties as natural diamonds. Their growth takes place in a laboratory rather than in the earth. They give you another option when comparing diamond size and specifications within your budget.
Moissanite is a different gemstone, not a lab-grown diamond. Choose it because you enjoy its appearance and the design it makes possible. Sadie is a good example of moissanite used creatively, with a near-colourless centre and green accents.
Mined diamonds have a natural origin. If that matters to you, ask us for a quote on a specific stone and setting. The Zoey design can be quoted with a mined diamond; its listed lab-grown price should not be used as an estimate for that version.
Coloured gemstones deserve their own place on the shortlist. A blue sapphire can be the first choice, rather than an alternative chosen only to reduce cost. Ask whether your selected gemstone is natural or lab-grown, and discuss its suitability and care needs for regular wear.
Set a budget for the whole purchase
Choose an amount that feels comfortable without relying on a salary formula. Then decide which features matter most to you. It is much easier to narrow the options when you know you want, for example, an oval centre, yellow gold and a simple band.
Check what is included in the quoted price, which documentation accompanies the stone, and any delivery or resizing costs that apply. If you are choosing a wedding band at the same time, allow for that separately and check how the two rings sit together.
The featured product pages list made-on-order production of 15 working days. Production time is separate from delivery, so discuss your proposal date with us before ordering rather than assuming a dispatch or arrival date.
